Green Schools: Biodiversity
This year we have begun our second theme of Biodiversity. We are learning all about the wild range of animal and plant life that lives in our environment.
We have had discussions about the various animal habitats that exist in our school grounds. Some animals that live here include hedgehogs, worms, spiders, mice, ants and various types of birds. We also have lots of different types of plant life such as dog roses, daffodils, sycamore trees, beech trees and of course lots of grass.
This year’s Green Schools’ Committee comprises Aoife (Juniors), Eden (Seniors), Dylan (1st), Aoibhinn (2nd), Liam (3rd), Ruairí (4th), Molly, Dylan (both 5th), Michael and Aaron (both 6th), with assistance from Mr. Ryan.
Some work we have completed so far includes a school grounds habitat study and a survey of both teachers and students’ knowledge of biodiversity. We discovered that very little was known at the start of the school year, most people didn’t even know what biodiversity is. (including the teachers!!)
We made habitat maps of the school grounds showing what animal and plant life live locally and we also comprised lists of these plants and creatures as well as making posters.
We were also lucky to have special visitors to our school with a ‘Birds of Prey’ show. They brought live tawny owls, barn owls, buzzards and hawks to our school. (as well as a few ferrets!) It was a really cool and fun show that links in with our biodiversity theme. Here is a picture of our committee and here are examples of their hard work.
The green school committee had a mascot competition. The winners were Molly, Alison, Lauren, Alannah and Annie-Rose with Casitty the Caterpillar, Niamh with Bella the Bumble Bee, Ciara with Mr Oxygen, Aoibhinn with Biodiversity Bunny, Cathal with Fluffa the Butterfly. Well done to our winners.
On January 27th Dale Treadwell came to our school to run a workshop on Biodiversity. He visited every class discussing creatures they would find in their local habitat. Dale presented this through stories, videos, powerpoint and photographs. Huge thanks to Dale who was fabulous with the children and spent ages answering their questions. Have a look at some of the photographs below.
